Flourish Ventures and Bolt set for Webinar on Women in the gig economy

Bolt, the leading on-demand transportation platform in Africa, and Flourish Ventures, a global fintech venture capital firm, with a strong focus on Africa, are set to hold a webinar on Women and the Gig Economy. The webinar, which is aimed at highlighting opportunities that the gig economy presents to women will be held on Thursday the 25th of March 2021 and will focus on educating, encouraging more women to engage in gig work while addressing the specific challenges that women face in joining the gig industry.

Themed “Women in the gig economy: Opportunities and Challenges”, the webinar will seek to celebrate women in the gig economy, highlighting the opportunities while also addressing specific challenges that women face in joining the gig sector. The webinar will encourage discussion on what could be done to welcome more women to the gig economy with an emphasis on both business and government solutions to drive inclusion.

Hillary Miller-Wise, the Africa Regional Director at Bolt Food, said that the webinar is a prime opportunity for more light to be shed on the diverse and inclusive nature of the gig economy. “The Gig economy is a real driver for transformation across Africa in terms of providing new streams of revenue generation. It does present women with a good opportunity to earn a living on their own terms and with flexible hours. This discussion is, therefore, a prime opportunity to further unlock new opportunities and avenues around this very pertinent issue for Africa,” she added.

Efayomi Carr, Principal at Flourish Ventures, noted that despite the challenges of the past year, the African gig economy will recover and continue to contribute to economic growth on the continent. “The insights that we shall share during the engagement will point us in the right direction in our journey towards including more women in the gig economy in Africa,” he added.

The webinar will feature Hillary Miller-Wise, Efayomi Carr, Dr Jane Munga a Policy Expert at the Ministry of ICT and Naomi Wanjiru, a media owner and women empowerment advocate.

Moderating the webinar will be TerryAnne Chebet, a former media and communications practitioner and now the founder and CEO of Keyara Botanicals who will share her insights on how she has managed to earn a living in the gig economy through her digital presence and profile.

People interested in getting more insight into the role that women are playing in the gig economy in Africa can sign up for the webinar at (webinar registration link). The webinar will take place at 3 pm East African time on Thursday, the 25th of March 202

Column: Caleb Otieno: Make empathy a reflex

‘Empathy is about standing in someone else 's shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes. Reflection is the means of processing thoughts and feelings about an activity, incident, or day. It gives us a chance to come to terms with our thoughts and feelings surrounding it”  People who understand how to watch, listen and observe the actions and emotions of those around them are often perceived as the most successful in life. A conscious alignment of one’s self with others starts with the development of empathy in the early years.  In the early years of life from age two to seven, young children are naturally ego-centric and are very much inclined to think mostly about themselves and their immediate needs. They are not yet ready to consider the needs and feelings of others. Developing a sense of empathy is an important developmental process for young children. It is at the heart of good relationships, and it begins with valuing others and their perspectives.  Tea

STUDENTS OF OLOIGERO PRIMARY SCHOOL POSE FOR A PHOTO WITH THE P&G TEAM AND PARTNERS OUTSIDE THE NEWLY BUILT DOMITORY Pupils of Oloigero Primary School in Narok County have a reason to smile after Procter and Gamble funded the construction of a girl’s dormitory in the school. The facility, which will accommodate 80 girls, will help support and improve the access to quality education in the area. “Access to quality education is affected by a myriad of challenges in this country. Inadequate infrastructure is one of them.  The situation is even more dire for our girls thus the reason we are here today to commission this dormitory. We believe that this facility will be a critical resource to help keep our girls in school and together with other partners we will work to ensure that we change the narrative about girls missing school due to menstruation,” said Anthony Ng’ang’a,  Associate Brand Director -Commercial Leader - East Africa at Procter & Gamble (P&G).
